文化庁派遣芸術家在外研修員として2003年ロンドンに滞在しました。その折にナショナルギャラリーでレンブラント(1606-1669) の油彩自画像1点、テートブリテンでウイリアム・ターナー(1775-1851)の水彩画7点を模写しました。この2人の巨匠を選んだのは、レンブラントの人間を深く見つめる目と魔術とも思えるその技術、そしてターナーの自然に対する深い観察力にじかに接してみたいと思ったからです。

When I was staying in London as a scholarship holder by the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan I have copied from one of the oil painting works by Rembrandt and 7 water color works by William Turner.

  • レンブラント「自画像」

レンブラントは生涯多くの自画像を残しましたが、私が模写したのは画家が34歳のとき、すでに成功を手にし、幸福な時期に描かれたものです。私は模写を進めていくうちに、それまで気づかなかった絶妙なテクニックを発見すると同時に、堂々と自信に満ちたその表情の中に言い尽くしがたい 孤独と悲しみのようなものを見出し、レンブラントの人間描写力にあらためて感動しました。

I have copied one of his many self- portraits. He had already succeeded and won fame then. That is why he looks rich and full of self-confidence in this portrait. However, I noticed and was moved with a kind of sorrow and loneliness in his eyes throughout I was facing to it for over 3 months. Actually, I realized the greatness of Rembrandt again.
